Whisper - A Puppet Embodiment Of Nature.

Meet My Latest Puppet, Whisper!
Handmade entirely from waste cardboard and second hand materials to be as environmentally friendly as possible.
To some it might look scary, but to me it's an embodiment of life and death in harmony.
(Although, it sits in the corner of my room and has made me jump a few times when I forget it's there in the dark)!
I am really pleased with how this turned out. It started out as a sketch with potential and I just had to turn into a puppet! My aim was to create a 'personification' of nature and only use environmentally friendly materials. I love nature, folklore and creepy things, so I am happy with how this turned out!
The Foliage
It did take a long time to create in between other work, but I loved creating every single detail. Each leaf has been handmade using a variety of techniques including embroidery, crochet, punch needle and needle felting. The fabric was sourced from second hand sources and includes old table felt, vintage trims and offcuts. Additionally, I wanted to use minimal glue, so the foliage was individually sewn
onto the base - it took a long time but was worth it!
The Skull and Hand
The skull and hand were created using paper mache with waste cardboard and scrap paper. I used a flour glue to be as natural and environmentally friendly as possible.
Paper mache skull with individually handmade leaves.

An articulated paper mache hand, in synch to the puppeteers hand. It can move each finger individually just like a real hand.
Needle felted mushrooms and hand embroidered ivy leaves.
A close up of the handmade foliage. A combination of embroidery, crochet, needle felting, punch needle and other textile techniques.
