Discover Portsmouth

An interactive map commissioned by The University of Portsmouth.

Discover Portsmouth

A commission for The University of Portsmouth's International Office. This map will be given as a special gift across the world on behalf of the University.

The map has a red filter that allows the user to discover Portsmouth. This allows people who do not know Portsmouth, to explore it, and learn about the historical, natural and contemporary elements the city has to offer. There is also a secret image hidden beneath the belly band, which adds a special touch when opened.

The covers and belly band are screen printed with an A3 risograph map inside. It was designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible, using soy based inks, recycled paper and hand printed covers.

The map is presented in a traditional map format. The outside uses blue to reflect the colours of Portsmouth as well as the seaside and maritime aspects of the city. This is also shown through the screen printed imagery on the cover such as the rope, anchor and compass. I have created a belly band to keep the map secure, which reveals a compass when removed. On the back of the map, I have included the university logo (within brand guidelines) and my details. The map is small, light and protected by the board covers.

When the map is unfolded, it reveals an A3 Risograph printed map and a red lens. The red lens is used to reveal 30 different locations around Portsmouth and ranges from attractions, museums, architecture and natural spaces. I aimed to reflect the different aspects that Portsmouth has to offer, showing the variety of styles, culture and architecture. It can also introduce local people to new locations they might be aware of. Each image also includes a number that matches a description on the left which includes a short summary of interesting information or history. This allows people who do not know Portsmouth, to explore it first hand, and explore the historical and contemporary elements the city has to offer.

The Story:
My gift's story is about exploring Portsmouth and discovering the different places and experiences it has to offer. By creating an interactive map, it creates a personal connection. It gives the gift receiver an opportunity to interact with Portsmouth, and view the architecture, history and contemporary attractions in their own time, while learning about it in a fun and interesting way.

The Experience:
The map is designed to create an experience. Firstly, opening a map is intriguing as you don't know what to expect inside. My map opens into an unexpected colourful map, which adds to the surprise. Then, the actual experience of using the lens to explore the map creates an almost magical experience when you realise that you can discover secret images. It creates a fun and unique experience.

Sustainability:
My map is as sustainable as possible. I have planned each part, so I can get as many maps as possible out of each sheet of paper/board to reduce waste. I have also used recycled paper, soy based (Riso) inks and handprinted methods. Apart from the lens, it is plastic free and can be recycled too. However, this is a special gift that is designed to be kept and used many times and so will not need to be thrown away.
